Our self-esteem, or confidence in our own worth or abilities, depends on how we perceive ourselves. From an early age, we begin comparing ourselves to others and deciding whether we “measure up.” In addition to our own comparisons, our parents, peers, or the media, bombard us with messages about what is desirable in our culture; the ideals that we should be striving for. Everything from what we look like, to what type of job we need to have to be considered “successful,” to what phone we should buy, is dictated to us by popular culture.
Being presented with these “in your face” expectations exhausts most of us, even if we aren’t consciously aware of it. It is difficult to be unaffected by the societal pressures to look, act and be a certain way. In this environment, it is no wonder that so many of us grow up to feel terrible about ourselves in so many areas of our lives.
We can either keep these negative messages alive by unknowingly repeating them to ourselves over and over, or we can identify this faulty messaging and do something to change it.
Oftentimes, our self-esteem is tied to our ideas about our bodies. If we think our bodies are too this or too that, then we do not feel good about ourselves overall. Let’s find out what you are saying to yourself about your appearance and how that is affecting you. Let’s examine the thought patterns and behaviors that are contributing to your feelings of low self-worth and change those patterns. Once you are free of thinking about yourself in a critical way you will be amazed at how much better you feel!
