Relationship Challenges

Relationships with others are challenging no matter who they are with!

Relationship challenges can arise between family members including our siblings, our parents or our children. Our relationships with our intimate partners are often the source of concern as are our friendships or relationships with co-workers, patients, customers or neighbors. No matter where the challenge lies, there is usually something we can to do to better navigate the relationship.

Relationships that are based on mutual respect and concern can be so rewarding that putting effort into improving them is definitely worth it. If the relationship has a healthy foundation, where honest and open communication is possible, then beneficial change can happen. Even if an unhealthy dynamic has taken hold, there is often a way to heal the relationship and get back on track. There are times, however, when a relationship has “run its course” and the best thing to do is to let it go. Knowing when that time has come can be hard to recognize and even harder to accept. Support during this process is especially important and reassuring.

Relationship challenges may seem insurmountable or so complicated that we don’t know where to begin to change things. Discussing the relationships you are concerned about is a great way to sort out the dynamics at play. Having an outside perspective on the situation can be particularly useful as it is often difficult to see these dynamics clearly when we are in the relationship ourselves.
